Economic Distress and Resurgence in U.S. Central Cities: Concepts, Causes, and Policy Levers

This paper written by the Boston Federal Reserve New England Public Policy Center provides a review of the literature on U.S. central city growth and distress during the second half of the twentieth century. It finds that city growth tended to be higher in metropolitan areas with favorable weather, higher growth, and greater human capital, while distress was strongly correlated with city-level manufacturing legacy.

Detroit Future City

The Detroit Future City (DFC) Strategic Framework is a comprehensive, action-oriented blueprint for the city’s equitable growth and development. ICIC’s research team was hired to conduct a comprehensive economic assessment of Detroit—the foundation on which Detroit Future City is built. By using sophisticated analysis and comprehensive data sets, ICIC defined Detroit’s cluster strengths and its occupational, educational and infrastructure assets. ICIC used the analysis to provide recommendations for how Detroit’s assets could be repurposed for future economic
growth.

Economic Investment Opportunity Study of Southeast Louisiana

This study analyzes the cluster development priorities of Southeast Louisiana post-Katrina and assesses how well the activities of the region’s local capital markets are aligned with the region’s economic development goals. The study provides recommendations on the role that Seedco Financial-Louisiana, a Community Development Finance Institution, can play in bridging the gaps that may hinder the region’s growth and cluster development.

This white paper is the second in a series outlining results from the 2012 Inner City 100 survey analysis. The paper looks at variables influencing where a firm looks for growth capital. A regression model identified seven factors explaining 58% of the variability among the firms, including CEO work history, CEO ethnicity and CEO age.
